The unorthodox and violent actions across Europe in 2000 by the unlikely alliance of Zita, an ex-Mossad operative, and Liam Reilly, an east-end criminal and alcoholic, results in an assassination attempt on their lives.
Despite living a supposedly invisible existence on Madonna, a houseboat in Amsterdam, they are eventually tracked down.
Following a failed sniper attack on their lives, they know there is nowhere to hide and they race to leave the city and travel to London.
With the end of the Kray’s stranglehold, the city and its criminal world are changing fast. The ever-increasing violence meted out by the Eastern European interlopers, the growing drug trade and the black economy create a world to which that Zita and Liam must immediately adapt to.
“I read all three books, Love Shack, I Will Survive, and Born to Run, which follow Liam’s and Zita’s thrilling adventures in the viciously dangerous criminal underworld.
I was immediately hooked on the story with Love Shack. I Will Survive was a fantastic follow-up with an ending that almost made me cry, and the third book, Born to Run, remains my favorite out of all three.
I connected best with Zita, but as a female reader, it’s not hard to. I loved watching her develop over the books, and her hardcore badass character as an ex-Mossad comes out to play in a big way in Born To Run. There’s a soft side to her that we only see in small elements like taking care of her tulips, but even more so with the slight romantic side of her with regards to her love and loyalty to Liam to help him stay on the wagon as an alcoholic. It’s not a lovey-dovey kind of romance, but it’s evident that Liam has taken up shop permanently in her heart.
The crime scenes are realistic and are certainly not on the mild side either, but I imagine that’s what it was like living in a world associated with the Krays. Graham Sclater did an incredible job with these books, all were real pager-turners, and it’s worth reading all three back-to-back. REVIEW – Cowboys And Angels by Graham Sclater
It’s not often that only a couple of chapters into a book, you already feel it would would make a great TV drama series or a movie. Yet that’s exactly how I felt when reading Cowboys And Angels, an engrossing thriller by Graham Sclater.
The central character is Harry Clark, an ex-Special Forces soldier now running a beachside bar in Cyprus who uncovers a people-smuggling racket, sickening child abuse and also the involvement of an old enemy who tried to kill him when he served in Iraq.
The story unfolds with rapid pace and Sclater deftly conveys a great sense of place and of character as events move relentlessly towards a shocking and graphic conclusion which sets your heart racing. A powerful and pulsating book by a writer with total command of the thriller genre.
